Do you have Flash Player installed? There are some risks

Do you have Flash Player installed on your computer? Most likely, you do. If you are not sure what Flash is, then you definitely should continue reading. The bad news is, your computer and all of your private information might be at risk. Before you panic, there is a way to fix this.

What is Flash and how did I get it?
Flash has been around since the 90's. It very quickly became a standard for most videos, online games, and animated advertisements. Flash allowed the web to become more "alive" by creative beautiful, colourful animations that drag your attention towards them. Similar to Internet Explorer, after 20 years of a solid reputation, Flash is on its way out.

Web Design Vancouver

What is the issue then?

Flash has always being the playground for hackers. Flash allows its developers to go beyond the web development coding language capabilities. It is far more flexible which creates a huge vulnerability for attacks to your local computer. By simply visiting a site with a Flash animation, the hacker implemented a code in the Flash animation which automatically runs when it detects you are there. From there, it directly accesses your personal information. Likewise, it can get as far as your computer files, which from there, the hacker can manipulate and exploit your data in any way they wish.

The big guys want it out

Despite Adobe's continues efforts to fix all the gaps in vulnerability of the program, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are fighting to get it out of the way. Both popular browsers announced that they will stop supporting Flash on their systems. Steve Jobs absolutely omitted Flash from being add to any of the Apple products.

"Allowing Flash - which is a development platform of its own - would just be too dangerous for Apple".
-Steve Jobs

New coding technology, such as HTML5, allows to fully replace Flash from the web. This will not only increase security, but also impact on the speed of the pages.

What should I do?
You can easily uninstall Flash from your computer by going to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find the program called "Adobe Flash Player (X) Plugin" and then hit right-click > uninstall. Doing so will disable your ability to watch videos on sites that require flash. If you really have to watch that video, and you trust the site, you can simply enable and disable flash when needed.

For chrome, you can simple type "chrome:plugins" in the address bar, this will take you to all of your plugins page, find Flash and right-click > disable.

For Firefox, go to Tools > Addons > Plugins and set Shockwave Flash to 'Ask to Activate'.

For Phones and Tablets, they are safe as they do not have Flash installed, so no steps need to be taken here.

Final Thoughts
Although it might be an inconvenience, by disabling and enabling Flash per need basis, you are securing your data from potential attacks, boosting page loading speed, and keeping pages cleaner while browsing.

Sincerely,

6 Things You Should Look for in a Good Web Designer

6 Things You Should Look for in a Good Web Designer

You've done your homework and you know your new business is bound to be a success, but only if you can establish a strong web presence. That starts with a powerful website to sell your brand - along with some strategic use of social media of course. Chances are your company has no experience in setting up a website so you plan on turning to a web designer to help launch your online business. How do you find a good web designer? It can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out which web designer to use. There are a gazillion options out there, but how do you choose the right one? Frankly, there are many bad choices to sift through and finding a good designer can seem like trying to find a needle in a haystack. While the task may be challenging it's not impossible. As long as you know the right questions to ask and the right things to look for you will find a great web designer that understands you and your business.

Finding Success on Craigslist

Website Development Vancouver

Craigslist is a popular place to find many things, but you have to be cautious when using it, as there are many dead ends. If you're going to use Craigslist in your search for a good web designer, it's best to do so with a critical eye. If a web designer can't even organize a good advertisement, they're probably not going to do a good job on your website. Do they provide links to their portfolio of work? Is their contact information easy to find? If the answer to any of these questions is no, you may want to keep looking.

Is the Designer an Open Book?

It's not important where you find a web designer, but it is important that they offer real value. They should clearly outline the services they offer and they should make it easy for you to contact them either by email or phone. If a company posts pictures of their employees on their site that's another good sign that they stand by their work. It suggests a sense of pride in their portfolio and a willingness to be associated with it. Finally, they should have no problem meeting with you in person - if they're not willing to do so keep looking.

What Does Their Portfolio Look like?

One of the best ways to get a good feel for a web designer is to look at their body of work. Does their portfolio impress you? If you like their style there's a good chance you're going to like the work they do for you, but if you look at their portfolio and you're not impressed it's probably best to keep looking. If they don't have a portfolio you shouldn't even consider them.

Are They Responsive?

Graphic Design Vancouver

Clear and honest communication should be a key focus of any business and that includes web design companies. If you have to chase the designer through several texts or phone calls to get a quote and clarify any questions then they're not the best choice. Designing your actual website is only part of the job of a professional web designer. They should also be good listeners and good communicators. It's unlikely that they'll design a website that captures the essence of your business if they can't respond to a simple text.

Professional Approach

When you talk to any business service provider, it shouldn't take long to get a sense of their level of expertise. A professional web designer should be well spoken, listen carefully to your questions, take proper notes, provide you with a detailed quote, and they should know their stuff! It's not a bad idea to compare a web designer's professionalism with other businesses or services that you've been satisfied with in the past. How do they compare?

Trust Your Gut

Vancouver Web Design

At Bragdeal we live the values discussed in this article every day. We encourage you to ask a lot of questions - in fact we look forward to them. Ultimately, it comes down to trusting your gut and we know that once we've had a chance to sit down and talk with your team you'll know that you've made the right choice. Don't just hire the first company you find, ask the right questions and do your homework. We will be here waiting for your call when you're ready.

What to do when the item is not selling

What to do when the item is not selling

You have been posting for a long time and received no calls. You have renewed the advertisement to get it back to the top and that did not help either. You really want to get at least some offers, let alone set up a meeting with a buyer and possibly sell your item. Don't reduce the price and give up as this is what the buyers are waiting for. What can be done though? A few things actually.

Start Fresh

It is tempting to copy and paste the same details into a new post over and over, but the main reason it is not working is because people begin to recognize the similarity in the details. A potential buyer that has been following your posts, due to same photos and same text, is patiently waiting for the moment you drop the price. How will that buyer know it is you if you start a new ad with new photos and a completely different text? They will not, and it might throw them off into thinking that is another seller with the same item/service. Our website http://www.bragdeal.com/branding/website

Photos matter

Check out the article about "Getting your ad to stand out", it covers exactly what you have to do to make sure your ad is seen by potential buyers. In short, make high definition photos, capture good angles, and of course, try to make the item/service look as clean as possible for the photo shoot - and for the meeting day of course.

Increase the price

This one may confuse you for a moment. Yes, increase the price. Think about it this way, if you list something for cheaper than everyone else, does it mean that you just want to sell it faster or could it also mean that something is wrong with your product or service? Definitely could. On the other hand, if you increase the price by %10 over everyone else, yes that could mean that you are overpricing it, but it could also mean "my product/service is the best out of all the other posts". Chances are, potential buyers will simply negotiate the price down to where you wanted it from the start!

The Top 7 Reasons Why You Should Have A Database

The Top 7 Reasons Why You Should Have A Database

It's been decades since manually-coded static webpages went out of fashion in favor of database-driven websites. But you would be surprised that there are still people who think databases are unnecessary and a complete waste of time. While it's true that a static HTML website will be fine for low-traffic and private websites, there are still a number of perfectly good reasons for migrating to a database-driven site even for those that will only be seen by a few visitors. Here are seven (7) of the most important ones:

#7. A Database Gives Your Content Another Layer of Legal Protection

If the content on your static webpage is scraped and reused by other websites, you have the option of serving them takedown notices or filing DMCA complaints through Google. But that's the extent of it. Even if they comply, there is nothing that prevents them from going back and doing it again. It becomes a battle of attrition at this point, one that loses you time, money, and effort because you only have finite resources.

However, if your website is database-driven, you have the law on your side. The Copyright Law protects databases because they are considered as compilations of intellectual property. All the data contained within a database are afforded protection even if the individual data is considered as facts (or ideas) that are not capable of being protected. If someone scrapes your content, they have infringed your copyright and you can take them to court. For example, Feist Publications thought they could get away with scraping the publicly-available directory of Rural Telephone Service Co., thinking that copyright law does not apply to the content because it's just a simple list of addresses. The courts sided with Rural Telephone Service Co. Visit our website @ http://www.bragdeal.com

#6. Allows Flexibility and Easier Management of the Website

A static web page must be manually edited every single time you want to update. This means you have to treat your website like a brochure, where the design and content cannot be changed without modifying and manually editing every single page. This setup is fine if you have no intention of ever updating your website, but completely unacceptable if you want your content to be relevant and up to date with the times.

A database, on the other hand, makes Content Management Systems (CMS) like Blogger, Wordpress, and Magento possible. A CMS will give you the ability to add, modify, and propagate content across multiple pages without touching a single line of code. It also simplifies layout redesigns because you only need to edit the layout once and the changes will automatically reflect across all the pages in your site. Imagine not having this ability at your disposal if your site has hundreds of individual pages.

#5. Makes Navigation and Searching Easier for Both User and Administrator

If your website is database-driven, you can tag and sort content based on any category you want, and this will give your users the option of sorting and searching your content based on the categories you have provided, or simply by searching keywords and topics they are interested in. Without this capability, users will have to manually browse every single page in your site - following links one by one until they find something worth reading. A majority of people on the Internet don't have the time for such cumbersome user experience. They will most likely click away from your site within seconds of realizing that you have a poorly designed, obsolete navigation structure.

The only alternative to a database in this case is to embed a third party search function, like the one that Google offers. But the results of this are spotty at best, and you're usually better off just going with a database-oriented approach.

#4. Makes Your Business Resilient

With a static website, you have to back up all of the files if you want to be protected from server crashes or hacking attempts. Even if you did, you won't be safe from the downtime involved with manually restoring the site to its original state. Depending on how large your business is and how reliant it is on the Internet, the downtime could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars in potential revenue, not to mention the manpower involved in getting everything back to working order.

If you have a database-driven site, you only need to back up the database containing all relevant data. This process takes a lot less time and resources than backing up hundreds of HTML pages. It also makes restoration simple - once you get the front end restored, you can import your database backup and repopulate the content in a fraction of the time it would have taken a static site to come back up. Additionally, databases can be made to be platform agnostic, so you can freely experiment with different hosts, different CMS's, and different servers without worrying about platform and API incompatibilities.

#3.It Allows You To Build a Redundant Website

One of the most effective contingency measures against unnecessary downtime is by building failover/redundant copies of a website and splitting load between them. This way, if one server goes down all of the traffic it's supposed to accommodate can be temporarily redirected to the other server, ensuring that you can continue to serve content to users even through maintenance or unplanned downtimes. While a failover system is possible with a completely static website, it is inefficient and would require more attention, compared to using a database. With a database-driven approach, the infrastructure only needs to keep copies of the front end synced and just have them use data from a single database (which you then keep offline backup copies of.) This approach is not only more robust and agile it's also less prone to syncing conflicts.

#2. Databases Will Make Your Site Future-Proof

As mentioned earlier in this post, there are people who believe that they don't need a database because their website is small and designed to serve only a handful of people. But what happens if the website proves to be a hit and attracts massive amounts of traffic? Do you give up and let it buckle under the weight of its own success or do you start taking advantage of its success in order to earn a profit?

If it's the latter, you'll find that you have to start over from scratch or manually update everything no matter how futile, because static webpages by design cannot accommodate the load and attention that successful websites attract these days. Not unless you have dozens of employees willing to do menial updates on a daily basis.

If your small, inconsequential website is built to use a database from the start, you won't have to worry about the future because it can be easily scaled according to demand, without the need for lengthy downtimes. It's also easy to hand over the reign to a third party designer or developer, because the database will give them all the content they need. They don't need to pore over your previous website just to learn where everything fits, because they can create a new one and just import the content via the database.

#1. It's Inevitable

Last, but definitely not the least, you won't be doing yourself any favors by refusing to adopt a more database-driven approach. Everything from CMS's, to eCommerce plugins and Social Media widgets will not work on a static website. If you want a site that's fully functional and can cater to the needs of the modern market, you need to resort to a database. It's also just a matter of time before databases become mandatory. In some countries (particularly Australia), the law requires businesses that use information from customers to maintain a database containing at least two years' worth of data, and to have said data available to law enforcement and the users themselves upon request. If there's no database available, the law has been broken and the business is in trouble.

Why Maintaining SEO Is Important!

Everyone knows by this point that SEO is important. Any business that depends on new lead generations will not get too far without having search engines bringing these leads to them. Clever people would already know to add all the meta tags possible, engage in social media, get many backlinks, etc. We all strive to get to the top page on Google, Yahoo, and all of the other search engines. Once we get there, we can just leave it right? wrong. SEO, just like anything in life, dies with time.
Graphic Design Vancouver

Once you finally get your website up and running on the web, all the fancy code and dynamic database that is built into your pages becomes pure static html. This way, search engine are able to send "spiders" to crawl your website's skeleton from top to bottom. By doing so, they collect the necessary data for the algorisms they have developed, from which they assign a rating to your website. Here is a list of some of the things they look for:

- Is your website's code written using the latest HTML5 language
- Does it follow the schema rules
- Is the code optimized
- Has anything changed in the past few days/months
- Is there any dead links
- Is there any authoritative link
- Are there dead pages that did not load
- How slow did the website load

This is just a brief summary of what search engines do, and if any of these is not done correctly, your competitors probably did their homework - putting themselves on top of you on the search rankings.

Now that you know the basics of maintenance for SEO, there are many other factors to watch out for. One of them is running out of SEO juice. What that means is, even if you have a professional website with the most extensive SEO done, if you redesign your website, change a domain, or edit certain parts, it can either improve or harm your performance on the search results.

For example, if your website, for the last 10 years, used to have a 'contact us' page like this:

http://www.bragdeal.com/rates

But now, with the redesign website it becomes:

http://www.bragdeal.com

These two are completely different URL's although they link to the same page.

Although the first link gained a lot of recognition from search engines over the years, it does not automatically transfer to the new link you created simply because it is the same page inside. The search engines actually treat the new modified link as though it a complete new website address and you guessed it, it starts the SEO all over from scratch. Can this issue be fixed? Of course. Leave a comment below and subscribe to our news letter to find out how!
