While it's true that a static HTML website will be fine for low-traffic and private websites, there are still a number of perfectly good reasons for migrating to a database-driven site even for those that will only be seen by a few visitors. Additionally, databases can be made to be platform agnostic, so you can freely experiment with different hosts, different CMS's, and different servers without worrying about platform and API incompatibilities.

One of the most effective contingency measures against unnecessary downtime is by building failover/redundant copies of a website and splitting load between them. This way, if one server goes down all of the traffic it's supposed to accommodate can be temporarily redirected to the other server, ensuring that you can continue to serve content to users even through maintenance or unplanned downtimes. While a failover system is possible with a completely static website, it is inefficient and would require more attention, compared to using a database. With a database-driven approach, the infrastructure only needs to keep copies of the front end synced and just have them use data from a single database (which you then keep offline backup copies of.) This approach is not only more robust and agile it's also less prone to syncing conflicts.

#2. Databases Will Make Your Site Future-Proof

As mentioned earlier in this post, there are people who believe that they don't need a database because their website is small and designed to serve only a handful of people. But what happens if the website proves to be a hit and attracts massive amounts of traffic? Do you give up and let it buckle under the weight of its own success or do you start taking advantage of its success in order to earn a profit?

If it's the latter, you'll find that you have to start over from scratch or manually update everything no matter how futile, because static webpages by design cannot accommodate the load and attention that successful websites attract these days. Not unless you have dozens of employees willing to do menial updates on a daily basis.

If your small, inconsequential website is built to use a database from the start, you won't have to worry about the future because it can be easily scaled according to demand, without the need for lengthy downtimes. It's also easy to hand over the reign to a third party designer or developer, because the database will give them all the content they need. They don't need to pore over your previous website just to learn where everything fits, because they can create a new one and just import the content via the database.

Last, but definitely not the least, you won't be doing yourself any favors by refusing to adopt a more database-driven approach. Everything from CMS's, to eCommerce plugins and Social Media widgets will not work on a static website. If you want a site that's fully functional and can cater to the needs of the modern market, you need to resort to a database. It's also just a matter of time before databases become mandatory. In some countries (particularly Australia), the law requires businesses that use information from customers to maintain a database containing at least two years' worth of data, and to have said data available to law enforcement and the users themselves upon request. If there's no database available, the law has been broken and the business is in trouble.

Why Maintaining SEO Is Important!

Everyone knows by this point that SEO is important. Any business that depends on new lead generations will not get too far without having search engines bringing these leads to them. Clever people would already know to add all the meta tags possible, engage in social media, get many backlinks, etc. We all strive to get to the top page on Google, Yahoo, and all of the other search engines. Once we get there, we can just leave it right? wrong. SEO, just like anything in life, dies with time.

Once you finally get your website up and running on the web, all the fancy code and dynamic database that is built into your pages becomes pure static html. This way, search engine are able to send "spiders" to crawl your website's skeleton from top to bottom. By doing so, they collect the necessary data for the algorisms they have developed, from which they assign a rating to your website. Here is a list of some of the things they look for:

- Is your website's code written using the latest HTML5 language
- Does it follow the schema rules
- Is the code optimized
- Has anything changed in the past few days/months
- Is there any dead links
- Is there any authoritative link
- Are there dead pages that did not load
- How slow did the website load

This is just a brief summary of what search engines do, and if any of these is not done correctly, your competitors probably did their homework - putting themselves on top of you on the search rankings.

Now that you know the basics of maintenance for SEO, there are many other factors to watch out for. One of them is running out of SEO juice. What that means is, even if you have a professional website with the most extensive SEO done, if you redesign your website, change a domain, or edit certain parts, it can either improve or harm your performance on the search results.

For example, if your website, for the last 10 years, used to have a 'contact us' page like this:

But now, with the redesign website it becomes:

http://www.bragdeal.com

These two are completely different URL's although they link to the same page.

Although the first link gained a lot of recognition from search engines over the years, it does not automatically transfer to the new link you created simply because it is the same page inside. The search engines actually treat the new modified link as though it a complete new website address and you guessed it, it starts the SEO all over from scratch. Can this issue be fixed? Of course.
